LOCATION OF POSITION: Monroe One BOCES, Various Locations
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Full Time, Part Time & Per Diem; 2019-2020 School Year
STARTING DATE: Continuous Recruitment
1. Provide receptive and expressive interpreting and /or transliterating in the K-12 educational setting.
2. Assist students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing to develop the necessary skills to successfully participate in the mainstream setting.
3. Participate in in-servicing faculty and students as necessary.
4. Read and respond to email communication on a daily basis.
5. Attend scheduled Deaf/ASL Education staff meetings.
1. Civil Service eligibility as Interpreter for the Deaf: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
A. Two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in providing American Sign Language interpretation services; OR,
B. Possession of a National Interpreter Certificate (NIC)* recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf; OR,
C. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language Interpretation or a closely related field; OR,
D. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.
*Must submit copy of certificate with application.
If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
2. Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree from an Interpreter Education Program or in a closely related field.
3. Demonstration of fluency in ASL and English and ability to process and interpret information effectively.
4. Documented score of 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Test (preferred) or hold current RID NIC, CI or CT certification, or attainment within first three years of employment.
5. Documented passing score on the EIPA Written Test, or attainment within first three years of employment.
6. Excellent skills in the areas of communication, flexibility and diplomacy.
7. Experience in support services programs with Deaf/Hard of Hearing students preferred.
8. Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation).
